At the time, long-term, sober living resident services for teens and young men in Los Angeles were unavailable. Soon after admitting the younger people, certain things became apparent. The disparity in their emotional ages, social skills, and life experiences was significant enough to require different approaches for each group of men for sobriety. Cameron continues to foster hope and empowerment in every individual who enters those doors. Mac Morrill spent years working in tv before he discovered his passion for recovery. It was not until he went through miracle house that he realized what his life was missing; sobriety, integrity, and community. Since learning this, he has made it a priority to share this new way of living with young men who are struggling as he did. He opened Vanderburgh House, a group of facilities for young men’s sober living in Los Angeles. With this, he had a vision of helping men abstain from alcohol and drug dependence.

I heard about New Life Warehouse from a friend who knew I was looking for a place to do some volunteer work. Once house members reach the vocational phase, they’ll go to work as scheduled. They are able to take advantage of the accountability the program provides. Additionally, the staff is aware of all comings and goings, and available to assist with any difficult situations that arise. Our sober living environment provides the benefit of sober housing and an engaged and attentive community providing support and mentorship. From Albuquerque, New Mexico, Robert came to Vanderburgh House in 2019 to seek treatment and has been committed to recovery since.

Different SLEs have different house rules designed to help residents remain sober. Rather than establish a set of rules and expect residents to follow them, we have built a system that teaches residents why certain processes are in place. As well, we explain why each of them is so important for long-term mental health, recovery success, and different aspects of life.

Additionally, a staff member oversees all house activities and manages it. Thus, the staff can address any concerns and make sure the residents feel comfortable in their temporary living arrangements. Halfway houses for addiction recovery are often located in desirable neighborhoods, providing the feeling of any other residence in the area. The safety and comfort levels of halfway homes are similar to those experienced in residential and intensive outpatient programs. We focus on developing life skills, guidance, and peer support, and offer relapse prevention strategies. This means addressing their mental health, and engaging in mentorship and programming.
